26th EEAC conference, Berlin, 11 October 2018 Towards a Sustainable Europe by 2030: Key leverages for transformation

The annual conference of the European Environment and Sustainable Development Advisory Councils (EEAC) aimed to urge the need to transform politics, society and the economy as required by the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The academia, civil society, the private sector and public bodies need to unite forces to push towards a sustainable Europe. Unfortunately, the anticipated fundamental change remains distant facing many hindrances. The conference attended by 200 people coming from over 20 different countries was dedicated to identifying the most important blocks and to fostering a European debate on the implementation on the UN’s SDGs in Europe. The conference was attended by key figures in academia, society and politics who had fruitful, transnational and transdisciplinary discussions in three groups: (1) the institutional foundations for transformative governance in Europe; (2) sustainable finance as a transformative lever for European policy; and (3) the radical changes, potentials and risks of digitalization for a sustainable Europe. Hungary was represented by NCSD’s co-chair, secretary and one staff member, the deputy commissioner safeguarding the rights of future generations and the chairman of the National Council for Environmental Protection.

The deputy commissioner attended the round table session called Environmental Governance: Reshaping Institutions and Policy for Transformative Changes.
