These communities located in the Northern Hungarian region struggling with multiple disadvantages set a good example for sustainability achieved based on local resources and knowledge.

Gábor Üveges, the mayor of Hernádszentandrás said: “In December 2010, Hernádszentandrás with a population of 445 located halfway on the “Kosice-Miskolc” started a journey that fundamentally changed its importance, status and role both regionally and nationally."

Modern welfare societies have created a level of material wealth – not equally for everyone – never seen before. However, one of the sources of this material abundance is often that the opportunities of future generations are depleted by the accumulation of debts, the plunder of natural resources, climate change, demographic decline and pyramid scheme-like pension systems. One of the major challenges, tasks of the early 21st century, is to become a sustainable society in which the wealth of today is not at the price of future scarcity.
