The Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Hungary

The National Council for Sustainable Development and the National Society of Conservationists organized a joint conference titled The Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Hungary in the Upper House Room of the Parliament Building on 7th February. The United Nations adopted Agenda 2030, the new framework for sustainable development one and a half years ago. The programme anticipates international, national and regional players including governments, the business sector, the scientific community and civil organizations to work together to implement the Agenda’s 17 goals and 169 targets.  Speakers at the conference representing the government, the civil society and parliamentary parties shared their opinions on tasks and challenges related to the accomplishment of goals such as the reduction of poverty and hunger, increase of knowledge, protection of natural capital and biodiversity and the fight against climate change. The conference with an attendance of nearly 400 was opened by Gábor Náray Szabó, NCSD’s co-chairman followed by Gábor Bartus, NCSD’s secretary who stressed in his keynote speech that the implementation of the UN’s sustainable development goals until 2030 is a key national priority for Hungary. On behalf of the government, Zsolt V. Németh, minister of state for environmental affairs, agricultural development and certified “Hungaricum” treasures at the Ministry of Agriculture and Ádám Zoltán Kovács, deputy minister of state for international cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade attended the conference. Speakers representing the civil society included Attila Chikán, chairman of the Business Council for Sustainable Development in Hungary, Gábor Vida, member of the Academy of Sciences, Katalin Sulyok, department head at the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, Lajos Kovács, chairman of the Alliance of Climate-friendly Communities, Csaba Bodroghelyi, secretary-general of the National Association of Large Families and István Farkas, chairman of the National Society of Conservationists. At the end of the conference, the representatives of the parliamentary parties shared their comments with the audience. Participants are NCSD members. János Bencsik spoke on behalf of Fidesz, Péter Harrach on behalf of KDNP, Lajos Kepli on behalf of Jobbik, Erzsébet Schmuck on behalf of LMP and József Tóbiás on behalf of MSZP. Closing the conference, Csaba Kőrösi, head of the Directorate of Environmental Sustainability at the President’s Office formerly serving as the co-chairman of the international negotiations developing the SDGs reminded that dedicated involvement is needed and recommended that Hungary create its sustainable development national profile.
