Ecosystem services provided by natural resources are direct and indirect benefits for society, produced by natural and human-regulated ecosystems. Amongst the benefits are provisioning services (food, animal feed, raw material), natural cycle regulating services (climate stabilization, pollination, flood control), supporting services (nutrient cycling, soil formation), and cultural services (recreation, education, art inspiration).


The National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) held its first board meeting this year in the Parliament’s Tisza Kálmán Room on 6th April 2017.

 


TThe National Council for Sustainable Development and the National Society of Conservationists organized a joint conference titled The Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Hungary in the Upper House Room of the Parliament Building on 7th February. The United Nations adopted Agenda 2030, the new framework for sustainable development one and a half years ago.


he National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) held its last board meeting this year in the Parliament’s Gobelin Room on 30th November 2016.

The first speakers were Ádám Zoltán Kovács, deputy minister of state for international cooperation and Gábor Valkó, department head at the Central Statistical Office informing the meeting on the tasks and institution system related to the Hungarian implementation of the UN’s Agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development Goals.


On 4th October, one day prior to the working group meeting, a group of Board Members and experts visited Halmaj and Hernádszentandrás to see good practices in Hungary. These communities located in the Northern Hungarian region struggling with multiple disadvantages set a good example for sustainability achieved based on local resources and knowledge.

Gábor Üveges, the mayor of Hernádszentandrás said: “In December 2010, Hernádszentandrás with a population of 445 located halfway on the “Kosice-Miskolc” started a journey that fundamentally changed its importance, status and role both regionally and nationally."
